Location Love: Exercise With Your MoChi Twister In New Places

MoChi Fitness has shown how to take care of your heart all month long and this last post is the ultimate treatment: Taking you and your best friend (your heart) to new places!

Working out in new environments aside from the gym, especially outdoors, is not only good for your physical health but your mental health as well. According to a 2011 study, exercising outdoors correlated with a decrease in anger, confusion, stress, and depression. So what better way to relieve your heart’s problems than with a little fresh air and new sights.

Take Your MoChi Twister and Heart Here:

  • Park your MoChi and you at the Park or Playground. That nearby park is the perfect place to bring both your dog and your MoChi Twister. And who says the playground is for kids only? Twist away while your kids play on the jungle gym.
  • Get a good game (and twist) in at the Golf Courses. One of our MoChi fans took his Twisters to the green and twisted during his friend’s turn. The twist exercises not only helped pass time along but improved his swing!
  • Twist and cheer at your kids’ Sport Games.  Tired of sitting on the bleachers? Twist and shout while your kids kick and score! Soccer, rugby, and baseball games are probably the best bets for sideline sets of twisting and shouting.
  • Move on your MoChi during ultimate outdoor activities: Camping and Hiking. Don’t wait until you get home from camping to hit the gym and twist. Pack your twister for your camping or hiking trip and move whenever you have downtime. Your outdoor experience will bump up your level of appreciation for exercise and the great outdoors.
  • Stretch and twist at Rest Stops. Road trips can be a doozy on the body. Sitting for more than 6 hours a day (in one sitting) can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. When you take that pit stop, make sure to twist it up!

Other Unexpected Places:

  • Office, during your breaks.
  • School, during the kids’ recess breaks.
  • Vacation, twist off the fat and feel less guilty about all that eating you’re doing.
  • Hotel, business trips can include mini twist sessions.
  • Airport, sitting around the gate can be boring. Twist while you wait.
  • Parking Lots, while you wait for someone/something like waiting to pick up your kids from school or from a movie.
  • Home, make mundane activities more fun on the MoChi. Watch tv, do your chores (the safe standing ones), or work from home all while twisting.

Tips For Embracing Your New Workout

  • Be Brave! It may feel a little weird to be twisting on your MoChi while cheering on your kids during their games, but the feeling will pass. The stares you get will mostly be out of curiosity and jealousy, because they’ll be thinking why didn’t they get in an efficient workout during their busy schedule too? The world is your oyster. Twist when you can and when it’s, for the most part, not disruptive. There’s no need to bring attention to yourself, but you do have to pay attention to your heart and give it every moment of exercise you can give.
  • Be Inclusive! Like the old saying goes, sharing is caring. If you’re showing your heart some love while you twist in interesting places, you’re likely to peak other people’s interests. Invite them to join you, and twisting in new environments will be even more fun.
  • Bring Props! Weights, hula hoops, scarves, medicine balls, the works. If you’ve got the option to tote these things along, do so. It’ll make the workout for your heart a little more dynamic and fun.

Food Love: Heart Healthy Goodies For Your Body

Your stomach may get all the goodies, but it’s your heart that deserves only the very best when it comes to food.  According to multiple studies, diets play a big part in heart disease. They can either add to the problem or keep it at bay.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and it’s important to note this statistic because a majority of women tend to be in control of the household menu. Hence, changing the grocery list will change the way you eat, and ultimately change the way you live your life.

Read on for our top heart healthy foods, tips and recipes for eating better, and other resources to keep your heart happy and strong:

Top Heart-Friendly Foods

    1. Whole Grains – dietary fiber helps reduce blood cholesterol levels, lowering the risk for heart disease. In general, fibers give you the feeling of being full, helping with weight management and food intake.
      • Ex: Whole grain bread, whole grain cereal, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole grain crackers, or popped popcorn.
      • Tip: Eat 25 grams of fiber each day
    2. Beans – the soluble fiber in these babies help bind cholesterol and keep it from being absorbed in the gut. They also contain flavonoids, that stop the adhesion of platelets in the blood, lowering risk of heart attack and strokes.
      • Tip: Eat 1/2 cup of cooked beans
    3. Veggies – Being high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and low in fat and calories, a rainbow of these earthly goods will help maintain your blood pressure.
      • Ex: Deeply colored fruits and veggies like spinach, berries, carrots. To get your sugar cravings fulfilled, eat apples, strawberries, bananas.
      • Tip: Challenge yourself to eat 3 colors of the rainbow a day. Eat 4.5 cups of fruits and veggies per day.
    4. Fish – The omega-3 fatty acids in fish, like salmon and tuna, slow the growth of plaque and lower blood pressure (slightly). They also decrease your risk of arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat).
      • Tip: Eat fish at least 2 times a week. 1 serving is 3.5 ounces cooked or 3/4 cups of flaked fish.

Tips for Shopping

  • When buying meats, choose chicken or turkey breasts. If you’re going to choose red meats, make sure to get the cuts marked “loin” or round. They have less fat. Choose “choice” or “select” grades of beef and trim the fat!
  • Choose nonfat or lowfat dairy options. Others are full of saturated fats. If you want a frozen treat, frozen fruit bars are the way to go.
  • Pick your fats carefully. Avoid saturated fats like butter, and opt for unsaturated fats like olive oil.

Food Prep and Cooking

  • Make recipes or egg dishes with egg whites, instead of egg yolks.  Substitute two egg whites for each egg yolk.
  • Stir fry your veggies but avoid high sodium seasonings like soy sauce or teriyaki sauce. Try wine, little oil, or veggie stock.
  • Roast, grill, or broil on a pan with a rack so the food doesn’t sit in its own fat drippings.
  • Steam your veggies in a basket over simmering water as they’ll retain more of their flavor.
  • Add flavor with herbs and spices. NOT salt.

Resources to Give Your Heart A Boost

Treat your hearty best friend with care, trust the words that ‘you are what you eat’, and you’ll live a happier and healthier life!

Stylish Love: Get Fit in the Right Outfit

What do your workout clothes say about you?

Better yet, how do they make you feel?

According to a study by Northwestern University, “enclothed cognition” is “the systematic influence that clothes have on the wearer’s psychological processes”. In the study, participants wore “doctor’s lab coats” which made them more careful and attentive (than those in “painter’s smocks”) while performing a task. So basically, what you wear affects how you think and behave.

By wearing something with positive association you will be more inclined to have positive thoughts or actions. In terms of exercising, wearing the right clothes will determine how you feel about yourself when you work out. Not only will you look great while getting a in a good workout, but you’ll feel great and inspired to do your best. Here at MoChi Fitness, we love a fun look and love even better a can-do attitude!

Simply put — don’t wear how you feel, wear how you want to feel.

Treat Your Heart Like It’s Your Best Friend… Special!

mochiredFebruary 1, 2013 was National Wear Red Day, marking The American Heart Association’s 10 year anniversary fight against the no. 1 killer in women: heart disease.

Only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat, thinking that breast cancer is a bigger threat. However, 1 in 31 American women die every year from breast cancer while 1 in 3 die from heart disease. That is about 1 death every minute.

The heart is red, a color that is powerful as well as stylish. That’s why AHA dedicates February as the month to Go Red – spreading both awareness and prevention tactics of heart disease to our moms, sisters, friends, family, teachers, coworkers, and neighbors.

The MoChi Fitness family is always looking for ways to help others live a healthy life and Going Red is a great way to do that!

We believe our hearts should be our number one priority, just like how our best friends are. We all love our best friends and go out of our way to show them how much we care, so we should all show our hearts the same attention:

Go for walks together

Go dancing together

Go to the gym together

Eat healthy food together

Go shopping together

Meet everyday in the lunch room to “MoChi-cise” together

Do whatever it takes to be a true and special friend to your heart!

Keeping Up Your New Year’s Fitness Resolutions

Did you know that, according to the University of Scranton Journal of Psychology, the #1 new year resolution this year is to “lose weight”?

As ideal as that is, here at MoChi Fitness we’d like losing unwanted weight to be a benefit that comes along with the real new year’s resolution: staying fit and being healthy. By shifting your focus from a goal that can possibly let you down (not losing pounds as easily or as fast as you’d like) to a goal that will change your entire lifestyle (staying in shape and eating healthy), you will undoubtedly succeed both resolutions by the end of the year!

To work towards and keep up your fitness resolutions, practice the following habits:

  1. Break down your resolution
    • Some resolutions take a lot of time and effort. To avoid being overwhelmed or giving up, break down the resolution by setting short-term goals. If you plan to “stay in shape and eat healthy”, start with a three-month period in which you commit yourself to not going out to eat as much and to start attending a local gym 1-2 times a week. From there, you can move onto the next three months with an even stronger commitment.
  2. Surround yourself with support
    • By putting your goals out there with your friends and family, you will have a support system to help you stick to the plan. Someone may even have the same goals as you, which will make achieving those goals 10x more fun and easy to do together. Workout buddies are always great and needed!
  3. Be grateful and have an open mind
    • If you find yourself frustrated, take a step back, put things into perspective, and choose to be grateful for all the things you have. Things could be worse but they aren’t. By letting yourself be aware of it, you will have a better sense of your reality and the goals you’re working towards. Avoid the negative replays from past failures and negative thoughts. By keeping an open mind, you allow yourself to be guided towards a positive perception of yourself and, ultimately, a positive outcome like achieving your resolutions.
